Homes are becoming smarter. “Alexa. Add milk to the shopping list”, “Alexa. Play my chillout playlist.”, “Alexa, Open garage door.”

The last phrase may soon become commonplace in homes as more and more homes are adapting their garage doors to locking/open/close through smart devices. There are so many on the market that soon many will have a garage door controlled by smart devices.

While the wireless garage door is older than the internet, modern technology has made it even easier to access our garage doors through our smartphones. They don’t replace buttons and keypads or garage door openers. They are simply integrated to your garage door system and give you control and access through your smartphone, tablet and laptop and are a becoming an addition to the modern home of the future. They are relatively quick and easy to install, so they can be a nice little feature to add to homes to make them more valuable and modern.

As mentioned earlier, if you have an AI assistant like Alexa, Cortana or Google Home, you may be able to control your garage door by using your voice. The AI assistant will work with a program called IFTTT (If this then that). Most AI-assistant enabled devices will only work for the closing of your garage door (for obvious security issues), so there is debate over how useful the systems will actually be. The good this is, you don’t have to be an expert or guru to install these devices, they can easily be linked to roller and sectional garage doors through a WIFI or Bluetooth connection and it’ll impress the neighbours!

With the digital age we live in, where we can have face-to-face conversations with people across the world, monitor our sleeping habits and heart rate in real-time, and consume any media at any time at the touch of our fingertips, are you really surprised about the level we can control a garage door with our smart devices and voice?
